A Wish List For My Daughters Future Employer Right now, my daughter wants to be anything and everything. Her creativity and imagination make zu sich think of a new occupation almost every day. The beauty of herbei being six is that she dreams with no boundaries. She pins no judgment on jobs that many people wouldnt think of as a career choice. She doesnt consider her own skill limitation when envisioning herself as a doctor, dancer or astronaut. The possibilities are endless for her as they should be. She will graduate college in 2032 at 21 years old with what I imagine will be the same enthusiasm she has now about making her mark on the world.I remember that excitement and uncertainty when I graduated college and began my 15-year career within the helping profession. An industry that is predominately filled with women working for salaries that barely reach the national average. Im used to being silent and not bothering asking for raises or excess resources knowing all too well the politics and realities of my field. Instead, I have relished in the joy I have felt in helping others, the large amount of vacation days and the ability to be as creative as I want. I look at my daughter, as she draws yet another scenario of her dreams and aspirations, and wonder what her definition of career success will be and how she will shape her life as a professional woman. My wish list of ways in which the landscape of the workforce can sustain her financially and fulfill her emotionally includes the below1. That she has a mentor. Millennials in the workforce value work-life balance and creativity differently than their predecessors, and I hope my daughter is supervised by someone who prioritizes leadership. Someone who embraces the ability to lead a team and can teach her how to become a leader. 2. That she learns how to take criticism. My daughter will grow up used to the ease of expressing how you feel over social media and watching reality shows with judges. I hope she wil l learn to provide feedback professionally, both verbally and in the written word. Also, shell control her emotions when accepting feedback and respond appropriately.3. That she has a creative outlet.Howeverher creativity manifests by the time she is workplace ready, I hope she is able to find a position that is both an outlet for her as well as one that challenges her underdeveloped areas.4. That she is held accountable. As a working adult, she needs to be held accountable for her good and schwimmbad actions in order to grow. Not everyone gets a gold medal. I hope her accomplishments are recognized (and possibly rewarded) and that she is encouraged to learn from her mistakes.5.That she isnt afraid to ask. I hope equal pay, paid family leave and the other issues facing women today are distant thoughts in another 10 years. But we still have a long way to go. Whatever our labor laws look like at that time, I am hopeful my daughter feels valued in her workplace. That she is not afraid t o ask for what she deserves, in terms of compensation and recognition, and most importantly, for the support she needs to execute her job effectively to feel and be successful.--Nicole Wolfrath is mom to two feisty girls in elementary and nursery school and has worked full time as a college career counselor for the past 15 years. Get stuff done, focus on 20% of work that leads to 80% of resultsGet stuff done, focus on 20% of work that leads to 80% of resultsTo get better results, do less but do it better. Many of us work in an endless stream of tasks, emails, notifications, meetings, multitasking in the process, never pausing and never ending. Pursuing mora and more every day.Information overload is killing our brains. Then the day is over, and you are extremely exhausted, and often have very little to show for it. And you start the next day, ready for a mindless stream of tasks and distractions, again.Living the 80/20 lifeIm sure youve heard of the Pareto principle, known also as the 80/20 rule focus on the few things that get you the fruchtwein benefit. The principle states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.Well, you probably have too much thrown at you at once every workday, and youre too busy juggling everything coming at you to take a minute and evaluate whats es sential, whats urgent, what you can delegate and everything else thats a waste of your most important asset. When you force yourself to focus on essential tasks that have a large Return on Investment (ROI), you will be more productive, achieve more and simplify your life in the process. To do more in less time, track the time you spend on tasks each hour of each day for a week. How many of your activities got you closer to your goals? How many were a waste of time? How many could have been delegated?Pick the 20% of your tasks that yield 80% of the results and outsource or simply discontinue the rest.To effectively pursue less and achieve more, use the MITs ruleChoose three Most Important Tasks for each day, and focus completely on gettting them done within a specific time.Any more than that and you might not get them all done.Achievement is a huge motivator.Progress will keep you going when you stop pursuing more. By restricting yourself to a small number of things, you force yourself to focus only on the essential.Make your to-do list short. Call it a success list, says Gary Keller, author The One Thing The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results.Gary explainsLong hours spent checking off a to-do list and ending the day with a full trash can and a clean desk are not virtuous and have nothing to do with success. Instead of a to-do list, you need a success list - a list that is purposefully created around extraordinary results.To-do lists tend to be long success lists are short. One pulls you in all directions the other aims you in a specific direction. One is a disorganized directory and the other is an organized directive. If a list isnt built around success, then thats not where it takes you. If your to-do list contains everything, then its probably taking you everywhere but where you really want to go.Less is moreThe key to focusing on the essentials in life and at work is to limit yourself to an arbitrary but small number of things, forcing your self to focus on the important stuff and eliminate all else.In Essentialism The Disciplined Pursuit of Less Greg McKeown writesThe way of the Essentialist means living by design, not by default. Instead of making choices reactively, the Essentialist deliberately distinguishes the vital few from the trivial many, eliminates the nonessentials, and then removes obstacles so the essential things have clear, smooth passage. In other words, Essentialism is a disciplined, systematic approach for determining where our highest point of contribution lies, then making execution of those things almost effortless. When you are doing too much at a time, you are constantly switching from one task to another, constantly interrupted, constantly distracted. Do less, clear away distractions, single-task, and get more done. When you do too much, your work is spread thinner, you have lower quality, and people wont spread your work like they should. By doing less, you can create something remarkable. Somet hing incredible worth sharing.Start today - pick what you think is most essential, clear some space, and just work on your most important measurable and attainable goals. The invisible power of choiceAttitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely. ?Roy T. BennettFor too long, we have overemphasized the external aspect of choices (our options) and underemphasized our internal ability to choose (our actions)When you dont purposefully and deliberately choose where to focus your energy and time, other people will choose for you, and before long youll have lost sight of everything that is meaningful and important to you.You can either make deliberate choices daily or allow other peoples agendas to control what you doWhen you forget your ability to choose, you become helpless and end up becoming a function of other peoples choices. You practically give others not just the power but the permission to choose for you. Dont surrounder your power to choose what gets listed on your to-do list for the day week or month. It takes courageTo do less.To be disciplined. To single-task.To stop multitasking. To slowly cut back on non-essential commitments. To schedule fewer meetings. To say no to requests. To cut out notifications. To set limits on how many things you do each day.To focus on the most important tasks first. To set limits on your work hours. To focus on the things that make the highest impact, and drop everything else.BUTYou can do this slowly, over time, and consciously. The result is youll have more room in your life for other things. Youll be more effective with your time. And youll be less stressed out.You dont have too little time to do all the things you need to do. Top reasons the debt snowball is the best payoff method for quick winsTop reasons the debt snowball is the best payoff method for quick winsDave Ramsey made thedebt snowballthe most popular method for paying off your bills. There are many reasons why you should pay off your obligations fast instead of letting them linger. Today Im sharing my topreasons the snowball method is the best way to pay off debt fast. And at the end of the post, Ill share one reason you should skip the debt snowball and which method you should use instead. Ill also give you afree copy of the spreadsheetI use to track my repayment goals.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe Case for Paying Off Debt FastLets be honest. You didnt get into this mess overnight. Think about your financial situation over the brde year. Then remember back to a time before you owed anyoneanything. Maybe you were a college student. M aybe you were still in high school, and you fell prey to credit card company vultures. Remember how much simpler life welches back then? Whatever your cause for getting buried in debt, its not too late to dig yourself out, and this method might be right for you. There is a direct correlation between Americans peak income earning years and peak debt years. According to a study by Time, heres a breakdown of how much Americans owe, based on ageUnder 35$67,4003544$133,1004554$134,6005564$108,3006574$66,00075 and up$34,500Parents are more likely to accumulate debt due to upgrading their housing, paying for extracurricular activities, such as dance, cheer, and sports camps, and paying for their kids college tuition.80% of you reading this right now are women who fit into the 35-44 age bracket. What does that debt number look like to you? High? Low? Are you somewhere around there?Lets assume that you owe $65,000 in cars and credit card debt. Forget about the house for a minute. Your tiefpun kt payments and balances owed are as follows$30,000 owed on a Chevrolet Silverado (hubbys truck), payment of $600 for 60 months$12,000 owed on your SUV $250 per month for 48 months$20,000 owed on a home equity loan used to put in a swimming pool last year $220 per month nadir payment$3,000 owed to Capital One Savor Card with a minimum payment of $55 per monthYour total owed is $65,000 (not counting the house), with minimum monthly payments of $1125. Lets assume your household income after taxes is $60,000. Are you seeing how scary it is that you owe more than you make in a year?$1125 is 22.5% of your income going to debt Now, if you allow 25% of your income towards your house, youre living on 52.5% of your income. If you tithe (or donate) 10% of your income, youre living on 42.5%.Thats not counting what youre putting towards retirement. Hopefully, youre (at least) taking advantage of employer matches your company offers. Now lets look at some different scenarios if you were consumer debt free.Debt Free Except for the House ScenarioIf you were completely debt free except for the house, what could you accomplish? Here are some scenarios. If you had an extra $1125 per month, thats $13,500 per year you could add to your retirement accounts. You could start saving for your kids college 529 plans. You could pay off the house in 10 years instead of 30. Heres howLets say you bought a house in 2013 for $150,000 at an interest tarif of 3.5% with principal and interest payments of $673.57 (now, thats not counting insurance and taxes). If you put an additional $1,000 per month towards your principal after youve paid off your debt, you can pay off the house in just 7 more years, shaving 16 years off your mortgageAn even better option to consider would be to look at the cost of refinancing to a 10 or 15-year mortgage, which would raise your payment slightly (but not $1100), freeing up some of the income to put towards college savings or retirement.Think about it. What could yo u do with the money youre paying towards debt?If you were able to live off 50% of your income and save the other 50%, financial independence would be achievableDebt Snowball-How to Pay Off Debt FastThe debt snowball isone of two methodsI recommend for paying off debt. Using this method, you list your debts, smallest balance to largest balance owed. Then, aftercreating a written budget, you take any and all extra income and throw the extra funds towards the smallest balance first, paying minimum payments to the rest of your bills. As you pay off your balances, the amount youre able to pay towards each debt increases because your debt snowball is getting larger. Theres an old saying, You cant chase two rabbits, and it means that when your attention is divided between two or more tasks, choose one to increase your odds of success. So dont pay more than minimum payments on all debts, and start paying all that you can towards your lower balances. I created a free debt snowball calculator t hat tells me exactly how effective my extra payments are (and how long until were debt free). You can get a copy of it here. We printed ours and keep it on the refrigerator to remind us of our goalsAn example of the debt snowball in action is as followsYouve written out your budget and determined that you have an additional $400 per month left over after paying minimum payments on all debts, groceries, gasoline for the cars, eating out, and all other expenses. Your debts, listed smallest to largest look like this (using the example above)$3,000 owed to Capital One at $55.00 per month$12,000 owed on SUV at $250 per month$20,000 owed on home equity loan at $220 per month$30,000 owed on hubbys truck at $600 per monthYoud take the extra $400 per month and pay $455 per month towards your Capital One card, paying it off in about 6 1/2 months. Now, Dave Ramsey would tell you to sell that truck in a heartbeat. If your income is $60k take home and you owe more than half of your income in cars that you cant pay off in 2 years or less, hed want you to get rid of it.Im not Dave Ramsey, and this is your life. You might not be able to sell the truck because youre upside down and owe more than what its worth. If thats the case, readthis poston how tosell anupside down car. Most of our financial mistakes over the past 10 years have had to do with trading cars with negative equity and financing the negative equity into the next loan.Im not here to judge. It took a long time for us to learn from our mistakes. You CAN get back on trackAn Alternative to the Snowball Method The Debt AvalancheThe only time you would not utilize the debt snowball as your main method of paying off debt fast is when youre a geeky, analytical person. Let me explain. The snowball is all about behavior modification. By attacking the smaller debts first, you quickly gain momentum and see results right off the bat This is a really great method if youre a free-spirited spender. If youre motivated by quick wins , the snowball is the way to go.However, if youre all about the numbers and saving money, the debt avalanche might be better for you. The debt avalanche actually saves you money in the long run because you pay less interest. By listing your debts highest interest rate to lowest interest rate and paying in that order, youll pay less interest and fees, saving you sometimes thousands of dollars. But sometimes our higher interest rate debts have higher balances, and it can take a while to gain momentum. The last thing you want is to fizzle out. I wrote a great post about the differences between thesnowball vs debt avalanche here.Be sure to check it out and dont forget to grab yourfree debt snowball spreadsheetso you can start tracking your payoff progress. This article originally appeared on Melissa Blevins. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Fr anklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people
